Same rankings, less traffic: why position one doesn't mean what it did
Your rankings held but your traffic fell. You're not imagining it — the link between top-10 rankings and AI Overview citations has broken. Here's what changed.
Here's a number that explains a lot of confused Monday-morning meetings: in July 2025, 76% of the pages Google cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for that query. By February 2026, that overlap had fallen to around 17%. Your rankings can now hold perfectly still while the traffic they used to earn quietly leaves.
The number behind your traffic drop
For years the deal was simple: rank in the top 10, get the clicks. That deal is breaking. Ahrefs put the ranking-to-citation overlap at 76% in mid-2025. By early 2026, BrightEdge measured it at roughly 17%, with the rest of AI Overview citations split almost evenly between pages ranking 11–100 and pages nowhere in the top 100 at all. Google is increasingly citing sources that don't rank well — which means a page can lose visibility inside the answer while holding its blue-link position perfectly.
And the clicks that are left are worth less

Even when you do rank and get shown, the click is worth less than it was. Organic click through rate on queries with an AI Overview has fallen by as much as 61% across 2025–26 studies, with position-one clicks down around 58% in some datasets. Coverage keeps expanding too — depending on the study, somewhere between roughly half and 60% of searches now show an AI Overview. So more of your queries are affected, and each affected query leaks more clicks. Those two trends compound.
Why the link broke
The timing points to one trigger. On 27 January 2026, Google made Gemini 3 the default model behind AI Overviews, and citation behaviour shifted noticeably afterwards. The model is choosing sources on relevance and quotability, not purely on classic ranking signals. So “we're number one” and “we get cited” have come apart — they used to be almost the same statement, and now they're two separate questions.
What this changes about how you measure SEO
If you still report success as average position, you're measuring the wrong thing. Rankings can be flat and healthy while sessions fall — and if position is your headline metric, that decline is invisible until the revenue conversation gets awkward. Two changes to make:
- Track citation presence, not just rank. Are you appearing in the AI Overview for your priority queries? That's now a separate question from where you rank organically.
- Watch click-through, not just impressions. In Search Console, falling CTR at a stable position is the fingerprint of AI Overview erosion.
What to do now
You can't rank your way into citations any more, so optimise for being quoted:
1. Answer the decision question completely. Pages that resolve a buyer's question end-to- end get cited more than pages that tease the answer and hold it back for a conversion.
2. Make passages quotable. A clear, self-contained answer near the top of the page — a definition, a direct answer, a specific number — is exactly what a model lifts into an overview.
3. Add structured data. FAQPage and Product schema help models parse and trust what's on the page.
4. Report on the right metric. Move client reporting from “we hold position two” to “we're cited in the AI Overview, and here's the traffic and conversion behind it.”
5. Don't abandon rankings — just stop treating them as the finish line. Ranking is now necessary but not sufficient. You still need to be on the page; you also need to be in the answer.
FAQ
My rankings are stable but traffic fell — is it a penalty?
Usually not. Stable rank with falling CTR is the signature of AI Overview erosion, not a manual action. Check the overview directly for your priority queries before assuming the worst.
Does ranking still matter?
Yes, but it no longer guarantees citation. Treat it as one input into visibility, not the outcome you report on.
How do I know if I'm being cited?
Check the AI Overview directly for your priority queries, and watch for CTR drops at a stable
position in Search Console. Together those two checks tell you most of what you need.
